The Spartans formally joined the NFL in 1930, however, because of the Great Depression and the declining economy, the Spartans couldn't survive in Portsmouth. In 1934, the team was bought, renamed the Detroit Lions and moved to Detroit, Michigan. Since 1934 the Lions have won 4 NFL Championships and they have tied for 9th overall for total championships won amongst of the other 32 NFL teams and franchises. They are also one of four current NFL teams to have never been in the Super Bowl. In 2013 the total attendance at Ford Field was at a record high at 510,369!
